Discover the Treasures Hidden on our Used Book Floor!

     Happy summer!  In response to the increasing popularity of the small used book section that used to occupy a corner of our store, we have recently transformed our entire second floor into the used book section.  This means that there are thousands of titles, some old, some newer, to choose from – all at a great value.  After all, who doesn’t love to browse a good used book section?

    The Bayswater used book section has also become a treasure trove of “found” items that have been left behind in the books by the previous owners of these titles.  Everything from pictures, old test score reports, letters written to others and so much more have been discovered hidden in the pages of these donated books.  As the interesting (and sometimes humorous) items began to pile up, we decided that we should not be the only ones to enjoy these artifacts.  So, it is with great pleasure that we begin our weekly Bayswater “Find of the Week on the Used Book Floor” blog.

     This week’s find was, by far, the most incredible.  Two letters from United States Senators, both dating from February, 1971, were found neatly preserved in a random used book.  The first letter was from J. W. Fulbright, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, responding to a letter from a Massachusetts citizen who was expressing concern about the Vietnam War related incident that took place in the Gulf of Tonkin in 1964. 

     The second letter was from Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy, himself, as he responded to the same citizen regarding further conflicts in Cambodia.  Senator Fulbright encloses a copy of the Senate hearings regarding the Gulf of Tonkin incidents with his letter, while Senator Kennedy attempts to assure that he will do all possible to put an end to the unpopular military conflict.  Imagine our surprise when these letters tumbled out of the book - what incredible finds!  You can check out the letters in the picture below.
